Gunma is well-known for pork, as there are more than 30 kinds of brand pork there. They have unique ways to breed to pursue the high-quality and tasty pork; for example, ‘Mugibuta’ is bred by feeding wheat grown in the prefecture. Especially, Maebashi City boasts its top-class of production of pork. Therefore, pork dish takes root in the prefecture, ‘tonkatsu’ (=pork cutlet) , one of typical pork dish, is served at many homes and restaurants. It is served not only as it is, but also with various menu as ‘katsu curry’ (=pork cutlet and curry sauce on top of rice), or ‘katsu-sando’ (=cutlet sandwich). In particular, ‘Sauce Katsu-don’ is popular by the locals as their beloved local food. It is said that its origin is an eel restaurant. The restaurant mixed traditional eel sauce with Worcester sauce to make its unique sauce and used for ‘sauce katsu-don’, and the dish became very popular. The restaurant serving ‘sauce katsu-don’ has been increasing since then.

In Kiryu City, where textile manufacturing was thriving, they ordered ‘sauce katsu-don’ for delivery because this dish is delicious although it gets cooler. It is still popular as a beloved local food, and served at many restaurants. It is very familiar dish, especially in Kiryu City, where people associate ‘katsu-don’ with ‘sauce katsu-don’, not regular ‘tamagotoji katsu-don’ (pork cutlet with cooked beaten egg on top of rice).
How to eat
According to ‘Kiryu Sauce katsu-don group’, organized by the restaurant association and noodle merchant association in Kiryu City, defined ‘Sauce katsu-don’ as ‘freshly-fried pork fillet dipped into sauce, then place on the cooked rice in a bowl on top’. There is no clear rule about sauce to use or pork brand, so you can enjoy various tastes in each home or restaurant. Fillet, loin or pork leg are used in some areas.

In Kiryu City, ‘‘Kiryu Sauce katsu-don group’ makes efforts to promote this dish by organizing Stamp Rally (going to many places to collect stamps), joining the events or making leaflets. ‘Sauce katsu-don’ itself is served not only in Kiryu City, but restaurants in Maebashi City or Isesaki City, and popular as a famous local cuisine in Gunma Prefecture.
